What is tic tac toe?
tic tac toe is a classic two-player strategy game played on a 3×3 grid. Players take turns marking X and O in empty cells. The first player to get three of their marks in a row — horizontally, vertically, or diagonally — wins. If all nine cells are filled and no one has three in a row, the game ends in a draw.
It's one of the simplest strategy games ever created, yet it remains surprisingly engaging. The small grid means every move matters, and against a skilled opponent, every game is a mental battle.
How to Play
Basic Rules
- The game is played on a 3×3 grid.
- Player 1 uses X, Player 2 uses O.
- Players alternate placing their mark in any empty cell.
- First to align three marks in a row (any direction) wins.
- If all 9 cells are full with no winner, it's a draw.
Winning Strategy
The center cell is the most powerful position — it's part of 4 of the 8 possible winning lines. The corners are next best (each part of 3 lines). Edge cells are the weakest (only 2 lines each).
With perfect play from both sides, tic tac toe always ends in a draw. The real challenge is exploiting your opponent's mistakes — and not making any of your own.
History
tic tac toe is one of the oldest games in human history. Variants of three-in-a-row games have been found in ancient Egyptian temples dating back to around 1300 BCE, and similar games were played in the Roman Empire. The game as we know it today became widely popular in the 20th century.
The name "tic tac toe" comes from a game played by quickly touching or tapping pencil and paper, popular in the late 1800s. The modern version — sometimes called "noughts and crosses" in British English — has been a staple of classrooms and homes for generations.
It was also one of the first games implemented on a computer. In 1952, OXO (a tic tac toe program by A.S. Douglas for the EDSAC computer) became one of the earliest known video games. Today, it's a benchmark for teaching AI fundamentals — the minimax algorithm that powers our AI is a classic computer science exercise.
